Weather System Malfunction and Weather Advisory Affecting Flights at YXS UPDATE

Prince George, BC – Central Mountain Air and WestJet have cancelled all flights in and out of Prince George today due to the weather advisory and Nav Canada’s equipment malfunction. The Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS), a device used to record weather, is not fully functioning. The replacement part has made it to Prince George safely, however due to the recent flight cancellations, a Nav Canada technician is still a few hours away from Prince George. He is expected to arrive late tonight and will start working on the equipment right away. The AWOS records critical information for the safety of flight including ceiling height, sky condition, altimeter setting, wind direction and speed, temperature and dew point.

Air Canada Express has a scheduled flight arriving at 12:07am November 27, 2014. At this time the flight has not been cancelled, but staff continue to monitor the situation.

Nav Canada is working very hard to restore the service and hope to have the system back up and running as soon as possible.

“Passengers travelling out of YXS today and tomorrow morning need to call their airline provider to make arrangements. Flight information and updates can be found on our website, www.pgairport.ca and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/FlyYXS.” says Prince George Airport Authority, Communications Manager, Lindsay Cotter.

We will continue to update the public via media release and social media channels.
