Weather System Malfunction Affecting Flights at YXS

Prince George, BC – Several flights at the Prince George Airport (YXS) have been impacted due to a Nav Canada equipment malfunction. The Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS), a device used to record weather, is not fully functioning. The AWOS records critical information for the safety of flight including ceiling height, sky condition, altimeter setting, wind direction and speed, temperature and dew point.

Nav Canada Media Relations Spokesperson, Ron Singer says “NAV CANADA is working very hard to restore the service. A technologist from NAV CANADA will be on site this afternoon. The replacement part arrived in Prince George this morning and we hope to have the system back up and running sometime this evening.”

“A number of flights in and out of YXS have been delayed or cancelled due to this equipment malfunction. We are asking the public to check our website, www.pgairport.ca, for the most up to date flight information before leaving the house.” says Prince George Airport Authority Communications Manager, Lindsay Cotter.

Impacted passengers are asked to check with their airline to make alternate arrangements.
