Canadian Airports Safety Week

Canadian Airports Safety Week logo

At YXS, safety isn’t just a requirement, it’s part of who we are. Whether you’re working on the airfield, in the terminal, or behind the scenes, every role plays a part in keeping our airport safe. Canadian Airports Safety Week is our chance to shine a light on that shared commitment, refresh our focus on safe practices, and say thank you to everyone who makes safety a priority every single day.

Throughout Safety Week, September 15 – 19, we’ll be celebrating with daily themes and prizes that put safety front and centre, ending with a FOD Walk and pizza at the Firehall on September 19 (noon to 1:00 pm). Daily prize draws can be entered online (link on the last page of presentation slides) or by completing a manual entry at our draw box located at the security desk.

Daily prizes include:

  • $25 Gift Cards, drawn daily.
  • Day passes for two to Barkerville Historic Town & Park (two sets of two). Drawn on top of daily gift card draws at random.
  • One two night stay at the Lowhee or Forest Rose Campground in Barkerville. Drawn on Friday, September 19.

All entries throughout the week, that have indicated participation in the grand prize draw, will be entered to win a Prince George Cougars Suite Night for you and up to 13 additional guests, Friday, October 24 where the Prince George Cougars face off the Seattle Thunderbirds (drawn on Friday, September 19).

Day 1 – September 15

Building a Strong Safety Culture and Hazard Reporting

These self-guided presentations set the foundation for Safety Week by focusing on two key parts of airport safety. Building a Strong Safety Culture explores how trust, respect, and open communication influence whether people feel comfortable speaking up and sharing concerns. Hazard Reporting explains what hazards are, why it’s important to report them, and the different ways reports can be made at YXS. Together, these sessions highlight how awareness and action help reduce risks and keep safety at the forefront.

Day 3 – September 17

Airside Safety and Worker Safety

Day 3 highlights two key areas that affect everyone working at the airport. Airside Safety looks at the unique risks of the airside environment. From vehicle operations and runway safety to the effects of weather and human factors, and how awareness and safe practices help reduce incidents. Worker Safety takes a closer look at personal safety, covering topics like fatigue management and the proper use of protective equipment to reduce risks from head to toe. Together, these self-guided presentations encourage practical awareness and safe decision-making in day-to-day airport operations.

Security Safety

Security is everyone’s responsibility, no matter your role at the airport. This self-guided presentation focuses on how to recognize and respond to potential security risks, such as piggybacking, suspicious activity, and unauthorized access to restricted areas. It also reinforces the importance of proper identification, knowing your access privileges, and reporting anything unusual right away. The goal is to keep security top of mind so we can all contribute to a safe airport environment.

We’ll meet at 12:00 pm (muster point to be confirmed) and spend about 20 minutes walking the airfield together to collect any foreign debris (FOD) that could pose a risk to aircraft and operations.
